We’re on for 2021!

So it’s happening! We are on for Sunday 26th September 2021 for a live fun run (unless Covid decides to rain on our parade again). Note the change in usual weekend in order avoid a clash with other local events.

We’ve spotted a lot of runners locally through the lockdown. Perhaps you have been working on a couch to 5k programme or are looking to log a PB? Perhaps you are looking for an event to inspire you to get out and start run/walking. Whatever your experience level we would love to welcome you to this friendly local event.

Grid of 9 photos taken at the 2019 shelford fun run.

As in previous years roads will be closed and we will be offering chip timing and a staggered start to allow the speedier runners to get away quickly.

The committee are currently applying for road closure, race licence, insurance and first aid, online entry organisation and reading up on UK athletics guidance on running a Covid-safe event. Of course there will be prizes for local businesses and not just for the speediest runners. A success of last year was the #ShelfordSelfie on instagram and facebook and we want to bring it back this year with a prize for best fun run related selfie!

We are delighted that our sponsors Bidwells, Gymbos, Zara, David Reed Homes, Davies Solicitors, Day Accountants, Relief Chiropractic and AngliEar Hearing & Tinnitus Solutions are generously supporting us again so that more money can go into the Playscape pot.

Artists impression of a small skate park next to a landscaped playgroundThis year’s fun run will be raising money for the next phase of the Playscape vision – the Wheelscape, a low level hard landscaped area designed by skateboarding specialist, for both learners and the more experienced to practice their skills.

We hope that the community will get behind us for this event and enjoy coming together as a community in September.

Prices will be £15 for adults and £7 for under 18s (refunds/ deferrals available in the unlikely event we have to cancel).

For those who can’t make it on the day or are not ready to join a live event we will be holding a virtual fun run option concurrently as we did last year, so that you can run / walk 5k your way at a time and location that suits you (with a  reduced entry fee of £10 and £5).

As usual we are looking for Marshalls for the event (no previous experience necessary) and volunteers to help up with our social media presence to publicise the run and / or race set up on the day. Please let us know if you can help via funrun@shelfordplayscape.org.

Sign up to our newsletter or follow us on FacebookTwitter and Insta for notification when registration opens next month!

Virtual Shelford Fun Run 2020: The Results

Thank you so much to everyone taking part in our event this year and congratulations to everyone who completed their virtual 5k!

Grid of 9 images: Including runners, a countryside view, a fitness tracker and a selfie close up. Text 'thank you' and 'shelford fun run 2020''. Brand logos for: Total Race Timing, Relief Chiropractic, Bibetta, NY Wines and Cambridge Fruit Co

It’s such a shame we couldn’t be together in the traditional sense (everyone in the same place at the same time, on the same day!), but it’s been fantastic to be able to hold the event in the virtual world and for our community still to be able to connect with each other!

Unfortunately, due to tightening restrictions on social gatherings, we have had to cancel the community event we had planned to hold, for people to collect their medals.  Instead we will be delivering and posting medals to you over the next few weeks.
results

Although we didn’t focus on winning times this year (due to everyone running their own routes) we do want to say huge congratulations to those who logged the fastest times:

Chris Smith (Male) – 00:19:35

Liz Carrothers (Female) – 00:23:25

Nate D (U18) – 00:24:28

Laurence M (U11) – 00:25:57

Photo: Head and shoulder close up of a young girl smiling at the cameraWe also want to give a particular shout out to Willow B, our #UniqueFeet competitor, who finds walking very difficult due to a rare genetic condition.   She took on the challenge to carry out the walk with her mum over a series of days to help encourage the family to get out and about after COVID shielding had paused.

This has been such a lovely benefit of the event having been virtual this year!

We’ve also had participants joining from far afield, and have had #ShelfordSelfie posts shared from Wales and Austria!

Perhaps something for us to think about, to make future events more incluisve?

You can find all the results on Total Race Timing’s website HERE!

Medal Event Cancelled

Well that’s a wrap!

Thank you so much to everyone who has taken part or helped out this year to allow us to continue with our much loved event, even if we couldn’t all do it together!

We had really hoped to be able to hold a community event on Great Shelford Rec, on our original run date of Sunday 20th September, to allow people to collect their medals. However with recent COVID restrictions coming into force this won’t be going ahead. We will deliver your medals to you instead (by hand to people who live locally and by post to those further afield)!

Look out for an email in the next few days with your ‘virtual goodie bag’ which includes some discount offers from local businesses and we’ll be announcing the winners of our competitions too!

Well done everyone on your achievement!

Medals

We’re loving the proofs for the medals this year!🏅

Mock up of square medal, edged in cold, with wording #ShelfordFunRun Virtual 5K 2020 and Shelford Playscape logo, with faint rainbow in the backgroundYou will find us at the Green Shelter on Great Shelford Rec on (our original run date) Sunday 20th September from 10am -12noon to collect your medal!

Unfortunately, as restrictions on mass gatherings are still in place, we cannot make this as much of a community event as we had hoped, so there won’t be refreshments or activities this time, but we’d love to take this opportunity to congratulate you in person (socially distanced of course) and thank you for taking part!

We’ll send out an email to all those signed up, after the run window expires on 15th September.

Don’t worry if you can’t make it on the day, we can post your medal to you instead.

We are always trying to improve our event’s sustainability and, as we always have a lot of medals left over, we are having the medals made to order (big thank you Sporting Medals).  So remember, if you’d like to receive a medal, please make sure to select the correct ticket* option when signing up (with just under 2 weeks left to log your run, there is still plenty of time!)!

SIGN UP HERE!

*There’s a small additional cost to help towards distribution.

We are going VIRTUAL!

We had really hoped to bring you a ‘live’ 5k Fun Run in September, but we are very mindful of the current coronavirus distancing measures, and the possibility that restrictions on mass gatherings may continue for some time…. so VIRTUAL it is!

Photo of the Great Shelford sign at the bridge between Great and Little shelfordWe will be setting up a two month window (15th July – 15th September) when you can run your own 5k for Great Shelford Playscape. We’ll suggest some local routes* (and may organise the odd surprise!), but essentially you will need to register with us (opening soon!), run your route using your chosen app to record that you’ve completed the distance, send evidence of your 5k to us and you will receive a medal. There are various free apps available for fitness trackers and smart phones that can be downloaded.

Keep an eye on the website and our social media for updates and more details (especially on how to run as a family), but in the mean time please still reserve our original date…

SUNDAY 20th SEPTEMBER 2020

… because, if it seems safe to do so, we’d love to have a little medal distribution event to mark your achievement! (Any maybe celebrate with the odd cake or two… )

*if you have a favourite off road 5k in the local area please do let us know!

Save The Date 2020

Great Shelford Playscape are delighted to be bringing back the Shelford Fun Run for 2020 on….

SUNDAY 20th SEPTEMBER 2020

Graphic with two photos taken at the Shelford Fun Run 2019 with text '"Save the date, 10:30am Sunday 20th September 2020"…. please make sure to pop the date in your calendar!

Due to the way dates fall this year, the school summer holidays finish later than usual and various annual events have adjusted their dates, so to avoid conflict, the Shelford Fun Run 2020 is going to be a little later in September than in previous years.

Do please follow our social media accounts (links below) as we will be sure to make announcements and updates on there… including when we open registration!

We would also love to make more connections with our Shelford and Cambridgeshire running community and to share tips, hints and achievements, so do say hello over on twitter, facebook or instagram!

Shelford Fun Run 2019: The Results

What a beautiful day, and so fantastic to see the village out in force and welcoming runners from all around the county (and beyond!)!

Start line before the raceWe had the most Shelford Fun Runners to date!

348 finishers!  Amazing!

The chip timing company brought with them some zippy new technology that made checking in a breeze and results were pretty instantaneous with text messages after the race.

New service facilities on the recreation ground (part of the Shelford Playscape masterplan) enabled us to have all the refreshments and entertainments in one zone, so we were able to keep the ‘race village’ nice and organised.

This year we also introduced a split start to give elite runners plenty of room to get off the mark, and the winners results were:

Patrick O’Hare (Male Adult): 16:35.9

Mikey Halton (Male U18):  19:47

Oliver Seaborn (Male U11): 20:02

Super speedy Oliver, who was hot on the heels of the 1st male U18,  just pipped the first woman to the post!

Nicola McBride  (Female Adult): 20.17

There was a bit of confusion as to which female under 18 arrived first, but judging by the finishing photos it was Sofia Munoz.  However, as she was wearing her father’s bib, she didn’t appear in her age category (Dad, you might want to keep your daughter’s time though!).  Making the female under 18s race a family affair…

Sofia Munoz (Female U18): 23:30

Emi Munoz (Female U11): 23.53

2019 fun runners setting off

Many congratulations to all the runners, everyone got back in under an hour, which is another event record!

We want to give a huge thanks to our volunteers (all 40 of them!) and to our sponsors including the marvellous Bidwells team who returned as our generous main sponsor, to Davies Solicitors, David Reed Homes, Day Accountants, AngliEar, Gymbos, Relief Chiropractic, Zara, and Waitrose.

Also to Tiara Hughes for a fantastic pre-race warm up and Noel Young Wines and Scotsdales Garden Centre for donating the prizes.

And not forgetting all the supporters, coffee drinkers and ice cream eaters!

Thank you all for making such a fabulous event, and for helping to raise funds (££ to be calculated!) for Shelford Playscape, the unique and inclusive playground which will enhance our amazing venue in the future!

For more photos of the day, pop over to the event ALBUM our Facebook Page.

Hope to see you all again next year….. watch this space for details!

Come and Run!

Couch to 5k? Or maybe just a coffee?

Fancy some company and motivation to get running…?

Or a coffee while the kids burn off some energy?

Photo of the Great Shelford Sports Pavillion viewed from across the Rec

Shelford Playscape will be hosting a meet up point and pop up cafe from 4pm-5pm on Friday afternoon’s at the Sports Pavilion on Great Shelford Rec on:

7th, 14th, 21st & 28th June 2019

and 5th & 19th July 2019!

We’ll set out some cones to indicate a measured route around the football pitches for people who want to get running (and for any keen kids, we’ll keep a tally of your mileage and pass it on to your school to add to your Golden Mile Award!).

There won’t be a formal training session, we just want to provide an opportunity for people to get together and encourage each other (and an excuse for a chat and some cake!)!

We’d love to see you there!
