So many people commented on the wonderful atmosphere and we were delighted to hear that some kind residents put out sprinklers to help our hot runners cool off –  a lovely touch!

We were rather blown away by sibling duo, George and Jasmine Christmas (numbers 92 & 93 pictured in the centre of the photo), who stormed home as first male and female, and at just 15 and 12 years old respectively – we were clearly witnessing the stars of the future!

Shelford Fun Run 2021: The Results!

We were delighted to return with the Shelford Fun Run live event again this year, and were over the moon to have sold out our 350 places before the weekend!  Looking out of the window as I post this at the rain bucketing down, it seems we also had amazing luck with the weather!

As our route is a fast and flat certified 5k on closed roads, it appeals to a fabulous range of participants, from elite runners looking for a new personal best, to families with pre-schoolers and this year we had someone running on their 80th birthday!

Due to the chip timing we are able to have a staggered start, to give elite runners plenty of room to get off the mark, and this year to help enable greater distancing between participants.

The winners results were:

Darren Matthews  (Male Adult): 16:32.9

Charlie Minnette (Male u18): 18:23.0

Sally Knight (Female Adult): 21:01.8

Kate Russell (Female u18): 22:22.8

Sophie Christmas (Female u11): 23:40.3

Joseph Button (Male u11): 24:20.9

A team of fabulous volunteers have worked hard all year to bring this wonderful event to life and we were joined by dozens more on the day to help set-up and marshal.  Thank you all for your support, it was an absolute joy to see the community out again giving it their all!

We also want to give a huge thank you to our fabulous sponsors including the marvellous Bidwells team who returned as our generous main sponsor and for providing volunteers on the day, and to AngliEarDavies Solicitors, David Reed Homes, Day AccountantsGymbos, Relief Chiropractic and Zara whose generous support means that all proceeds can go to Shelford Playscape!

It was great to be able to see the newly emerging Playscape alongside the start and finish funnel which previous fun run events have helped to finance.  This year the funds are going towards the next phase of the Great Shelford Playscape project – a new wheelscape (a hard landscaped skating/scooting area).  For more information about these and other projects around the rec head over to Shelford Playscape’s website.

Thanks also go to Waitrose for donating fruit and Tesco for donating the water, Noel Young Wines and Scotsdales Garden Centre for donating the winners prizes and to Cambridge City FC for providing marshals on the day as well as fielding Lily the Panda on the run!

And of course, not forgetting all the supporters, cheerers, coffee drinkers and ice cream eaters!

For more photos of the day, pop over to the event ALBUM our Facebook Page.

Hope to see you all again next year….. watch this space for details!

Meet the Team: Holly

With just 7 weeks to go, the Fun Run team and myself are busy getting ready for Sunday 26th September. We have had a fantastic number of entries so far for both the live event and the virtual race option.

Registration is in advance this year.

It is a good time to reflect on the success of Shelford Fun Run, with the fun run contributing more than £15,000 to the Playscape, that is now under construction, our fundraising efforts turn towards the Wheelscape phase of the Great Shelford Playscape masterplan. I, like many others, have been inspired by Team GB’s successes in Skateboarding and BMX in the Olympics. This space will be an excellent place to learn and hone these skills.

So how did I, a novice jogger end up as Race Director for Shelford Fun Run? Well after being on the Shelford Playscape committee since its inception, the opportunity arose for Shelford Playscape to take on the fun run as an annual fundraising event. My ambition to get everyone in the community active has resulted in me taking the lead of an awesome crew of volunteers and Marshalls (come and volunteer with us*, it’s great fun!), and with the support of other local run organisers and our UK Athletics adjudicator, this event has gone from strength to strength. Even a pandemic did not stop us from raising money last year! I love being part of the Shelford community and this is my chance to give something back.

View from Jenny’s Path, Great Shelford

I started jogging a several years ago with a group of fellow Mums from the Shelfords, preparing for the 10k Race for Life. Since then, most of us have continued to run regularly with some entering their first Marathon this year.

As for me, I’ve opted to keep it around 5k, plugged in to my dance music playlist!

My favourite jog is from the centre of Great Shelford out and round the fields via Jenny’s path, see route here.  I love the views especially at this time of year. I am back on the Couch to 5k programme to get ready for my Virtual Fun Run, as I will be busy ensuring the live 5k event runs smoothly on race day.

If you would like to volunteer with me on race day, please email me at funrun@shelfordplayscape.org.

See you there!

Holly

Race Director

Registration for 2021 is now open!

REGISTER HERE

We may not be able to accept on the day entries this year (it depends on social distancing guidelines at the time) so we strongly recommend registering in advance.

This year we are also going to continue the virtual race option for those unable to attend in person. You can register through the same link above. The virtual 5ks should be completed between 20th July and 20th September.

The new inclusive playscape is now currently under construction (yippee!), so this year, funds raised by the #ShelfordFunRun will go towards the wheelscape (skating area) phase of the Shelford Playscape masterplan.

We could not run this event without the generous support of our fabulous sponsors, so a huge thanks go to: s Bidwells, Gymbos, Zara, David Reed Homes, Davies Solicitors, Day Accountants, Relief Chiropractic and AngliEar Hearing & Tinnitus Solutions

In training?

Don’t forget to share your training or virtual run pictures to inspire others on Instagram, Facebook or Twitter with the hashtags #ShelfordSelfie and #ShelfordFunRun.

Not running?

If you are able to volunteer on the day to help set up / marshall or clear up we’d love to hear from you! Please email funrun@shelfordplayscape.org.

We can’t wait to see you at the start line!

We’re on for 2021!

So it’s happening! We are on for Sunday 26th September 2021 for a live fun run (unless Covid decides to rain on our parade again). Note the change in usual weekend in order avoid a clash with other local events.

We’ve spotted a lot of runners locally through the lockdown. Perhaps you have been working on a couch to 5k programme or are looking to log a PB? Perhaps you are looking for an event to inspire you to get out and start run/walking. Whatever your experience level we would love to welcome you to this friendly local event.

Grid of 9 photos taken at the 2019 shelford fun run.

As in previous years roads will be closed and we will be offering chip timing and a staggered start to allow the speedier runners to get away quickly.

The committee are currently applying for road closure, race licence, insurance and first aid, online entry organisation and reading up on UK athletics guidance on running a Covid-safe event. Of course there will be prizes for local businesses and not just for the speediest runners. A success of last year was the #ShelfordSelfie on instagram and facebook and we want to bring it back this year with a prize for best fun run related selfie!

We are delighted that our sponsors Bidwells, Gymbos, Zara, David Reed Homes, Davies Solicitors, Day Accountants, Relief Chiropractic and AngliEar Hearing & Tinnitus Solutions are generously supporting us again so that more money can go into the Playscape pot.

Artists impression of a small skate park next to a landscaped playgroundThis year’s fun run will be raising money for the next phase of the Playscape vision – the Wheelscape, a low level hard landscaped area designed by skateboarding specialist, for both learners and the more experienced to practice their skills.

We hope that the community will get behind us for this event and enjoy coming together as a community in September.

Prices will be £15 for adults and £7 for under 18s (refunds/ deferrals available in the unlikely event we have to cancel).

For those who can’t make it on the day or are not ready to join a live event we will be holding a virtual fun run option concurrently as we did last year, so that you can run / walk 5k your way at a time and location that suits you (with a  reduced entry fee of £10 and £5).

As usual we are looking for Marshalls for the event (no previous experience necessary) and volunteers to help up with our social media presence to publicise the run and / or race set up on the day. Please let us know if you can help via funrun@shelfordplayscape.org.

Sign up to our newsletter or follow us on FacebookTwitter and Insta for notification when registration opens next month!

Virtual Shelford Fun Run 2020: The Results

Thank you so much to everyone taking part in our event this year and congratulations to everyone who completed their virtual 5k!

Grid of 9 images: Including runners, a countryside view, a fitness tracker and a selfie close up. Text 'thank you' and 'shelford fun run 2020''. Brand logos for: Total Race Timing, Relief Chiropractic, Bibetta, NY Wines and Cambridge Fruit Co

It’s such a shame we couldn’t be together in the traditional sense (everyone in the same place at the same time, on the same day!), but it’s been fantastic to be able to hold the event in the virtual world and for our community still to be able to connect with each other!

Unfortunately, due to tightening restrictions on social gatherings, we have had to cancel the community event we had planned to hold, for people to collect their medals.  Instead we will be delivering and posting medals to you over the next few weeks.
results

Although we didn’t focus on winning times this year (due to everyone running their own routes) we do want to say huge congratulations to those who logged the fastest times:

Chris Smith (Male) – 00:19:35

Liz Carrothers (Female) – 00:23:25

Nate D (U18) – 00:24:28

Laurence M (U11) – 00:25:57

Photo: Head and shoulder close up of a young girl smiling at the cameraWe also want to give a particular shout out to Willow B, our #UniqueFeet competitor, who finds walking very difficult due to a rare genetic condition.   She took on the challenge to carry out the walk with her mum over a series of days to help encourage the family to get out and about after COVID shielding had paused.

This has been such a lovely benefit of the event having been virtual this year!

We’ve also had participants joining from far afield, and have had #ShelfordSelfie posts shared from Wales and Austria!

Perhaps something for us to think about, to make future events more incluisve?

You can find all the results on Total Race Timing’s website HERE!
