2024 Shelford Fun Run raises £4000!

… and was a sell out… AGAIN!

A huge thank you to all of you – our amazing 2024 Shelford Fun Runners!
We had a brilliant day and we hope you did too!

This was our biggest Shelford Fun Run to date, with 436 finishers, and despite rising event costs, you helped us to raise an amazing £4,000 for our two charities!

… for the next phase of the Great Shelford Recreation Ground inclusive masterplan.

Before the 5k set off, Cllr Peter Fane, Chair of South Cambs District Council, kindly joined us to officially open the #ShelfordWheelzone – the mini skatepark that our previous Shelford Fun Run events have helped to bring to fruitition! And while he was here, Peter helped Tony from M-Power Fitness get our runners warmed up and ready for action!

This year we had an official photographer!
Tim Chapman’s photographs are available to download FREE from the Sublime Timing website.
(Unfortunately we can’t guarantee that everyone was captured as the photographer had to move positions a number of times to capture the essence of the day)

Well done and thank you to Elliot, our Race Director’s 10 year old son, who raised an additional  £443.75 in sponsorship for CamRARE’s Unique Feet community group!  Elliot’s sister (who helped her dad as tail marshal for the 5k) has a rare condition, so the family are members of the Unique Feet group, which provides peer support, friendship and access to inclusive activities.

Great Shelford Parish Council’s additional ‘fun day’ elements (tasty food, bouncy castles and a duck race!) and the Power2Inspire Super Sensory 1k slotted in brilliantly, enhancing the family friendly festival vibe, and we hope to be able bring something similar next year!

Speaking of next year… please watch this space for date announcement… hopefully coming soon!

…to EVERYONE involved in the day.

Many thanks to Cara Coffee for opening and donating proceeds from that morning.

And a massive THANK YOU to all our amazing volunteers who help set up and marshal the course and to our wonderful sponsors who cover the costs of putting on an official closed roads race – we couldn’t do this without you all!

If you haven’t already signed up for the Shelford Fun Run 5k race and family friendly fun run/walk – don’t delay it’s only 2 weeks away!

We can’t take new entries on the day so you need to sign up in advance. The sign up system will close on Friday 27th (if not before if we sell out like we did in 2023 & 24!)

The fast and flat #ShelfordFunRun is a measured 5k course on closed roads through the villages of Great and Little Shelford in Cambridgeshire.

For serious runners it’s a great chance to register your personal best.

For beginners and family groups the event is perfect for jogging or walking at your own pace, enjoying the beautiful villages car free and savouring the atmosphere.

If you have signed up, look out for an email from our registration & chip timing partner Sublime Timing a few days before the event.

This year we have more capacity in the 5k than ever before, so with support from Great Shelford Parish Council, you will find more activities and refreshments in the race village too! From bouncy castles to a duck race on the river, as well as the…

Entry for the Shelford Fun Run 5k and 5k Race is now OPEN!

To avoid a few other local events and to give everyone a little bit more time to get organised after the summer holidays (not least our organising committee!), we have moved to the last weekend in September.

Hopefully this will also mean we won’t have such meltingly hot temperatures to contend with as we did in 2023!

Early bird pricing!

We are delighted to be able to offer early bird ticket pricing this year until the end of school term – so don’t miss out on a bargain before you head off on your summer holiday!

Shelford Fun Run 2021: The Results!

We were delighted to return with the Shelford Fun Run live event again this year, and were over the moon to have sold out our 350 places before the weekend!  Looking out of the window as I post this at the rain bucketing down, it seems we also had amazing luck with the weather!

As our route is a fast and flat certified 5k on closed roads, it appeals to a fabulous range of participants, from elite runners looking for a new personal best, to families with pre-schoolers and this year we had someone running on their 80th birthday!

Due to the chip timing we are able to have a staggered start, to give elite runners plenty of room to get off the mark, and this year to help enable greater distancing between participants.

The winners results were:

Darren Matthews  (Male Adult): 16:32.9

Charlie Minnette (Male u18): 18:23.0

Sally Knight (Female Adult): 21:01.8

Kate Russell (Female u18): 22:22.8

Sophie Christmas (Female u11): 23:40.3

Joseph Button (Male u11): 24:20.9

For the full list of RESULTS – CLICK HERE

A team of fabulous volunteers have worked hard all year to bring this wonderful event to life and we were joined by dozens more on the day to help set-up and marshal.  Thank you all for your support, it was an absolute joy to see the community out again giving it their all!

We also want to give a huge thank you to our fabulous sponsors including the marvellous Bidwells team who returned as our generous main sponsor and for providing volunteers on the day, and to AngliEarDavies Solicitors, David Reed Homes, Day AccountantsGymbos, Relief Chiropractic and Zara whose generous support means that all proceeds can go to Shelford Playscape!

It was great to be able to see the newly emerging Playscape alongside the start and finish funnel which previous fun run events have helped to finance.  This year the funds are going towards the next phase of the Great Shelford Playscape project – a new wheelscape (a hard landscaped skating/scooting area).  For more information about these and other projects around the rec head over to Shelford Playscape’s website.

Thanks also go to Waitrose for donating fruit and Tesco for donating the water, Noel Young Wines and Scotsdales Garden Centre for donating the winners prizes and to Cambridge City FC for providing marshals on the day as well as fielding Lily the Panda on the run!

And of course, not forgetting all the supporters, cheerers, coffee drinkers and ice cream eaters!

For more photos of the day, pop over to the event ALBUM our Facebook Page.

Hope to see you all again next year….. watch this space for details!

Meet the Team: Holly

With just 7 weeks to go, the Fun Run team and myself are busy getting ready for Sunday 26th September. We have had a fantastic number of entries so far for both the live event and the virtual race option.

Registration is in advance this year.

It is a good time to reflect on the success of Shelford Fun Run, with the fun run contributing more than £15,000 to the Playscape, that is now under construction, our fundraising efforts turn towards the Wheelscape phase of the Great Shelford Playscape masterplan. I, like many others, have been inspired by Team GB’s successes in Skateboarding and BMX in the Olympics. This space will be an excellent place to learn and hone these skills.

So how did I, a novice jogger end up as Race Director for Shelford Fun Run? Well after being on the Shelford Playscape committee since its inception, the opportunity arose for Shelford Playscape to take on the fun run as an annual fundraising event. My ambition to get everyone in the community active has resulted in me taking the lead of an awesome crew of volunteers and Marshalls (come and volunteer with us*, it’s great fun!), and with the support of other local run organisers and our UK Athletics adjudicator, this event has gone from strength to strength. Even a pandemic did not stop us from raising money last year! I love being part of the Shelford community and this is my chance to give something back.

Photo of a flat field with a blue sky above and hedgerow in the distance.
View from Jenny’s Path, Great Shelford

I started jogging a several years ago with a group of fellow Mums from the Shelfords, preparing for the 10k Race for Life. Since then, most of us have continued to run regularly with some entering their first Marathon this year.

As for me, I’ve opted to keep it around 5k, plugged in to my dance music playlist!

My favourite jog is from the centre of Great Shelford out and round the fields via Jenny’s path, see route here.  I love the views especially at this time of year. I am back on the Couch to 5k programme to get ready for my Virtual Fun Run, as I will be busy ensuring the live 5k event runs smoothly on race day.

If you would like to volunteer with me on race day, please email me at funrun@shelfordplayscape.org.

Selfie head and shoulders photo of a white woman wearing a blue running t shirt and smiling at the camera. A tall hedge fills the background. I would love to see your training or virtual race selfies with the hashtags #ShelfordFunRun and #ShelfordSelfie, here’s one of mine for starters!

See you there!

Holly
